According to Turkish Data Protection Law, data controllers are required to register with the data controller registration system which is called “VERBİS”. In Turkey, Non-resident Data controllers are also subject to the same obligation. Register to the VERBİS deadline is 31.12.2021. There is an unreasonable administrative fine if this VERBİS registration is not done.

Categorical information such as the contact information of the data controller, the nature of the personal data processed, the purposes of the processing, the retention periods, and the security measures taken must be entered In the VERBIS registration.

In Turkey, the non-resident data controllers must appoint an “In Turkey, resident data controller representative ” before registration. After this process, the steps in the system will be followed and the registration process will be completed. If the non-resident data controller has a subsidiary in Turkey, this must also be registered as a resident data controller in Turkey. However, there is no such obligation only for the liaison office.
